Watch Now: Manurewa is On Board for Transport Choice! Will You Get Onboard?

On Saturday, September 21st, the Manurewa community came together at Mountfort Park for a day filled with connection, conversation, and advocacy for safer, more accessible transport options. Hosted by All Aboard, the event offered free coffee, delicious kai, and the chance for locals to discuss the potential $14 million infrastructure upgrade that could transform Manurewa’s streets.

Here’s what went down…

Why This Event Matters

At the heart of the event was a crucial conversation about cycling and pedestrian safety. Currently, Manurewa is considering a significant investment in infrastructure that would include new footpaths and cycleways along Mahia Road and Roscommon Road. This $14 million upgrade would improve safety for everyone—from children biking to school to pedestrians navigating busy streets.

The proposed project isn’t just about building safer roads; it’s about offering the community more freedom and choice. Safe, separate cycleways will allow people to get where they need to go—whether that’s school, work, or the local shops—without the risks associated with sharing the road with cars. Tamariki, in particular stand to benefit, as cycling to school could become a viable, safe option.

The Impact of Cycling on Communities

Cycling saves people time and money, improves health, develops autonomy and reduces pollution and congestion, it’s a total win/win,” says Marie Guerreiro, Executive Director of All Aboard.

Studies revealed that safety is one of the biggest barriers to cycling, especially for vulnerable groups like children. This upgrade could make a world of difference for families in Manurewa.”

Marie Guerreiro states that cycling 10 km a week instead of driving could save someone $1,500 a year. Beyond the financial benefits, cycling also promotes better physical and mental health, reduces traffic congestion, and contributes to a greener, more sustainable future.

A Day of Connection

The event wasn’t just about infrastructure talks. It was also a chance for the community to gather, connect, and enjoy the beautiful day. Locals enjoyed free Sāmaori Coffee, food from Mākimā Eats, and real-fruit ice cream from Takanini Ice Cream. Over 120 people came out to show their support, and the atmosphere was buzzing with excitement about what the future of transport could look like in Manurewa.

What’s Next for Manurewa?

This event is just the beginning. All Aboard will continue working with the Manurewa community to push for the infrastructure upgrades that will make these safer streets a reality.
