Decarbonising Aotearoa’s Transport System – Building a Brighter Future for Generations to Come
In Aotearoa, the call to decarbonise our transport system is more than just an environmental initiative; it’s a mission to create a better, safer, and more sustainable future for our tamariki - the future generations to come.
The work we do today is a legacy for tomorrow, and with each step towards a greener transport system, we’re not only helping our communities today, but we’re also ensuring that future generations can live, play, and connect on a thriving planet.
A Vision of Kids for Transport
In the report “A Vision of Kids for Transport” produced by Crank in collaboration with Auckland Council, it was found that 86% of students rated walking, biking or wheeling as their favourite methods of transport.
“When I’m older, I would love for NZ to have much more sustainable transport. I hope that there will be better transport soon” says Olivia, aged 10, from Point Chevalier School.
“I’d like to see people using more buses, trains, bikes, walking, scooters. No cars.” says Ayesha, aged 10, Kelston Primary School.
“I want to know how we can change things now? Even if we're little, there must be a way for kids to help make our cars, transport, and roads safe. That's what I want to know because I want to help make the world a better place for everyone to be happy.” says Vrisha, 10, Newmarket School.
In the key themes of the report, it’s clear that:
Children are clued up about the links between climate and transport
They prefer active modes of getting around: walking, cycling and wheeling
They value transport that is social, active and sustainable
The next generation is already geared up for a low-carbon transport future
Safe and Accessible Spaces for All
Imagine an Aotearoa where our streets are safe for everyone, from young children learning to ride their first bikes to grandparents out for an evening stroll.
Decarbonising our transport system isn’t just about reducing emissions — it’s also about designing spaces that prioritise people over cars, creating safer, more inclusive, and accessible spaces.
By shifting toward sustainable options like cycling, walking, and accessible public transport, we’re building a network that allows children to move, discover, connect, learn, and play with greater ease and safety.
The Time to Act is Now
The journey to a decarbonised Aotearoa will not be easy, but it’s essential if we want a future where our children can thrive in a world that is healthier, more vibrant, and resilient, Every action, every kilometre biked, every electric bus ride, and every car trip replaced by public transport brings us closer to this vision.
Together, we can transform our transport system, protect our natural environment, and leave a legacy we can all be proud of.
By choosing a path towards decarbonisation, we’re choosing a future that offers our children the safe, accessible, and sustainable infrastructures they need to explore, learn, and connect with the world around them.
Our tamariki are already on board, are you?
