Meet the All Aboard Action Alliance Members: Wednesday Challenge

What if one day a week could help transform your whole community? That’s the simple idea behind the Wednesday Challenge – a fun, practical initiative that’s getting people across Aotearoa to change how they move, one midweek trip at a time.

From students and teachers to office workers and city leaders, the Wednesday Challenge is helping thousands of Kiwis shift towards healthier, lower-carbon, more connected travel – all through a weekly commitment to travel differently on a Wednesday.

A Challenge That Builds New Habits

The concept is refreshingly simple: each Wednesday, participants ditch the solo car ride and choose a better way to travel – whether it’s walking, cycling, scootering, taking the bus, carpooling, or even working from home.

Each trip logged earns points and rewards, and contributes to a growing national leaderboard. But the real reward? Less congestion, fewer emissions, safer streets, and a big boost to wellbeing.

By turning climate-friendly travel into a weekly game, the Wednesday Challenge is helping people create new habits that stick – and proving that sustainable transport can be enjoyable, achievable, and community-powered.

Programmes for Everyone: Schools, Businesses, and Cities

We love how adaptable the Wednesday Challenge is. Whether you’re an individual commuter, a large organisation, or a whole city council, there’s a version of the programme tailored to your needs:

  • For schools, it’s about reducing traffic at the school gate, improving safety, and encouraging tamariki to move more.

  • For businesses, the challenge supports staff wellbeing, reduces parking pressure, and helps meet sustainability goals.

  • For councils and cities, it’s a practical way to support mode shift, lower emissions, and build community engagement.

With options to run standalone school or business programmes,  or combine them for a city-wide impact , the challenge is a ready-made tool for creating lasting, local change.

Climate Action That’s Fun and Inclusive

Climate action doesn’t have to be about sacrifice, and the Wednesday Challenge is living proof. By rewarding better travel choices with points, prizes, and a sense of purpose, it invites communities to be part of something positive and collaborative.

You don’t need to be an athlete or a climate expert. You just need to be willing to try something different – even if it’s just once a week.

Even better: you can earn points for all sorts of options, not just walking or biking. Work from home? That counts. Take the train? Definitely. Even skateboarding, scootering, or hopping on a ferry will get you closer to the top of the leaderboard.

A Perfect Fit with the All Aboard Vision

At All Aboard, we’re working for a transport system that puts people and the planet first. The Wednesday Challenge brings this to life – helping to build a future where getting around is easier on the climate, better for our health, and more enjoyable for everyone.

It’s a joy to have them as part of the All Aboard Action Alliance, and we can’t wait to see how far the challenge can go.
